Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has contributed to significant advancements in our understanding of the brain and human behavior. Aided by recent theoretical and methodological advancements, fMRI has grown into a powerful tool for communication scholars to investigate how messages influence the brain. In this chapter, we review extant literature relating to the interacting roles of brain imaging technology and multimedia design. We focus this review in two primary areas: First, we discuss the use of neuroimaging as an individualized predictive tool for health-related outcomes of interest. Next, we review the promise of neuroimaging and media design for the diagnosis and treatment of cognitive disorders such as ADHD and autism.
