The Synchronization Theory of Flow Experiences (STF; Weber et al. 2009) proposes that the experience of flow is characterized by synchronization of cognitive control and reward networks in the brain. Almost ten years have passed since the publication of STF, and evidence has accumulated in support of its core predictions. At the same time, recent work in neuroscience, mathematics, and communication allow for further advancement of STF. In this manuscript, we review the core assumptions and predictions of STF, discussing recent research testing its main hypotheses. In addition, propose five advancements to STF in light of new theories and methods. Finally, we outline three ways in which STF can be applied for pragmatic and humanitarian benefit.
